When the metallurgical engineer Julius Buch founded the "Völklinger Eisenhütte" in the spring of 1873, he could not have imagined that he was laying the foundation stone for more than 100 years of iron and steel production on the Saar. On 12 May, Julius Buch received the building permit for the construction of the ironworks.

What followed were 150 years full of ups and downs, with numerous innovations and economic development thrusts as well as armament production, forced labour and environmental pollution. Today's World Heritage Site reflects the era of high industrialisation, German and European history as well as the Anthropocene era, in which man has massively shaped and changed the earth.
