In his 1993 installation, X-Ray, Hans Kupelwieser cast an adjustable wrench in concrete and made it visible again as an X-ray image on a light box. This piece plays with the transition between visibility and invisibility, allowing viewers to experience both simultaneously. Thus, Kupelwieser unfolds a sculptural discourse on materiality, representationalism and human perception. Ultimately, his conceptual art leaves open the question of whether the tool is actually in the concrete slab.
