Description
Thomas Bevelander and Jurgen Wiegeraad first met as schoolmates, sharing a passion for skateboarding and graffiti. After studying graphic design, in 2013 they founded the Rotterdam-based design duo Thomas & Jurgen, working across books, posters, album covers, murals, copyzines and visual identities. Their methodology—described as a series of “visual jam sessions”—translates the improvisational logic of jazz into design, adopting the poetics of the analog while adapting to the possibilities of the digital. The works on view for the Urban Art Biennale 2026 are made with self-made tools such as cylinders, cubes and squeegees. The process foregrounds their collaboration as visual improvisation and offers the viewer insight into its own making. They describe the results as “still lifes of fleeting moments”. Thomas & Jurgen bring these physical forms together in temporary installations they call SETs, where existing and new works come together in spatial compositions.
