Description

In MASS, the London-based Italian photographer and artist Alex Fakso turns his attention to an iconic venue of contemporary urban culture: the image depicts a Berlin techno club filled with young people dancing, their bodies ecstatically dissolving and reforming to the rhythm of light, sound and movement. Fakso’s photographic perspective remains true to his roots in graffiti documentation. As in his earlier works, he is less interested in the individual portrait than in the dynamics of a group unfolding within a specific, often enclosed space. The photographic prints are applied directly to the wall and interact with its materiality, irregularities and marks. Cracks, textures and architectural features become part of the image’s surface, lending the work a raw, almost tactile quality. This creates a tension between photographic precision and urban imperfection. Fakso began his career in the 1990s and was among the first to photographically document the activities of European graffiti artists.
