Milo

Description

French artist Milo has built a long-term practice around the idea of urban archaeology: the careful recording of traces left by anonymous bodies on the surfaces of the contemporary city. His project for the Urban Art Biennale 2026 is built from a deceptively simple gesture. Milo took a chunk of period coal from the Ironworks’ own historical archive and scraped it with a file into a fine black pigment. With it, he revealed the invisible smudges left by passers-by on glass surfaces in public space when they press a hand, lean a shoulder or rest a forehead. From these surfaces he lifted twenty such imprints, locating each one in the territory through GPS coordinates and composing a collective memory of urban presences. Returned to the building that once consumed the coal that now records them, the imprints close a symbolic cycle: what was once the engine of production becomes a language of memory, and the gestures of ordinary contemporary bodies answer, across time, those of the workers who built the place.
