Work pays - Art ennobles

With “Work pays, art ennobles”, Andrea Ceresa makes a statement on the Völklinger Hütte trail that is as simple as it is multi-layered. Six silver coins, fixed to the ground along the path, play tricks on the eye: only one side of each is visible, whilst the other remains hidden. The inscription ‘Work pays – Art ennobles’ in six languages – German, French, English, Italian, Turkish and Russian – plays on an age-old yet still relevant tension between economic labour, symbolic value and cultural elevation. The kopecks used, featuring a proletarian motif and exactly one hundred years old, evoke a past in which labour, ideology and visual language were closely intertwined, and relate it to a site that is now being reinterpreted as a cultural monument. This creates a quiet yet precise interplay between visibility and concealment, between memory and re-evaluation. Andrea Ceresa, an Italian writer and artist, deliberately navigates the roles of curator, author, activist and visual artist. The carefully affixed coins are an invitation to look more closely and to reflect on the value of labour, art and place.
