In his 2021 photo series The X-Rays, Lebanese-American artist Walid Raad focuses not on the stories told by the paintings, but on what holds the artworks together: their frames and fixings. The X-rays reveal wooden frames studded with dozens of nails, staples, and other metal pieces used to secure the canvases. Thus, the frame, usually invisible, shifts from being a hidden object to a visible subject in its own right.
