In literature, Thomas Mann explored both body and soul in his 1924 novel The Magic Mountain. He created a psychological portrait of a society on the brink – isolated from the world in a sanatorium high in the Swiss Alps in the years before the First World War. The X-raying of the patients becomes a symbol of a pre-war society diseased at its core, whose ailment is tuberculosis only in a metaphorical sense.
