In Survival Through Design, published in 1954, Richard Neutra argues that architecture should not only be aesthetically and formally interesting, but that it is also crucial to the physical and mental survival of humanity. As architecture constantly generates nerve impulses through light, colour and sound, it always has an effect on human beings. Neutra built the Lovell Health House in Los Angeles in 1929 for naturopath Philip Lovell. On the back cover of Survival Through Design, an interior view of the human body is superimposed on a photograph of the skeletal structure of the house.
