British artist Nick Veasey appropriates a technique normally used in research, development and quality assurance for his monumental works: X-ray imaging of large objects such as vehicles and helicopters. His 2024 work The Fly Away depicts a failed escape by helicopter, with numerous banknotes falling out of a money case and being whirled up by the rotors – a scene straight out of a classic action film, only completely X-rayed. Veasey scanned the entire helicopter in Germany using a giant X-ray machine. In his own studio, he X-rayed skeletons, clothing and other objects before finally combining all the elements into the overall image of The Fly Away.
