Between futuristic hero mythology, computer game and manga aesthetics, and medical visualisation, Shanghai artist Lu Yang pushes the boundaries of the visible with Uterus Man: the uterus, a sexual organ hidden within the body and otherwise absent from images of consumer and everyday culture, becomes the protagonist. The genderless heroine figure unleashes her superpowers from the female organ and transforms supposedly highly private and publicly invisible processes such as menstruation, pregnancy and birth into martial arts. The body is shown as transparent, superhuman and boundless – beyond fixed gender images.
