Elsa Schiaparelli
Inspired by a drawing she received from surrealist Salvador Dalí, Elsa Schiaparelli created one of her most iconic dresses as part of the 1938 Le Cirque collection. The three-dimensional effect of the outward-facing bone structures is created using a quilting technique, whereby individual layers of fabric are stuffed with cotton wool. Equally iconic and avant-garde is the Shoe Hat, inspired by a photograph of Dalí wearing a woman's shoe as a hat.
