The personification of deadly temptation in Edvard Munch's painting The Death of Marat, painted in 1907, depicts Tulla Larsen. The Norwegian artist had a tumultuous romantic relationship with her for several years. It ended in 1902 when Munch shot himself in the left middle finger, probably during an argument. Since then, he has had to work without the tip of his finger and has portrayed himself in various works as a victim of Larsen, which only confirms his general opinion of the danger posed by women. The X-ray shows Munch's injured hand before the operation, for which he refused general anaesthesia so that he could follow the procedure.
