This book dating from 1697 and comprising and array of pictures and texts is the author’s life’s work. When Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban signed the preface to the second part of his hand-written fortress book, he was a renowned expert in the art of warfare, boasting decades of practical and theoretical experience in the field. An engineer, royal fortress builder and high military officer, he was the architect of numerous military installations. Some impressive examples of his work can still be found in the Saar region, the most prominent of which are the imposing citadel in Bitche and the fortress town of Saarlouis.
