“If we must not leave our home, and the church and the homes of the people survive the war, we pledge to erect a shrine in undying gratitude to Mary, Help of Christians, our Heavenly Protector.” In 1950, this promise – made in autumn 1939 by the Church of the Blessed Trinity in Wiebelskirchen – was fulfilled. A Lady chapel was built in the parish church’s forecourt, and the Portuguese artist Antonio Alves was commissioned to build a statue of the Virgin Mary. A large number of people donated valuable jewellery to create the crown, which was made by a blacksmith in Saarland.
